    Formulating Resolutions!

Microsoft is officially in the new financial year. As a Microsoft technical community, I am aligning our group’s activities and calendar to fit Microsoft’s FY. This will help us achieve more alignment and have better chance to get resources, attention and support. This has in the past year been very successful for us as a group. We had a lot of activities held in line with Microsoft’s theme for the past FY. If you have been with me every month, you would have realized that we had been pretty much involved in quite a few initiatives and activities. Huge in the last FY (Jul 07 – June 08), SWUG has participated in Server Launch Wave, CTU2007, Community Launch Wave..etc.

In FY09 (Jul 08 – June 09), I want to realign the group to several focus, and I seek your help in achieving this. I won’t be able to achieve this without your help as a community. If you would like to help shape the next year, please attend this Thursday’s roundtable during our evening meet-up.

Reach out to New IT Pros

Every year, many newbies join the IT Industry. When on the job, they require a lot of mentorship and learnings, get bumps along the way and progress. I would like to position SWUG to help fellow Windows IT Pros cope with this and ramp up quickly. I do ask everyone, whether you are new or expert into the industry, to join us and contribute. I’ll be starting a basic IT Admin role base each month, I do hope everyone contribute your advice or views. I will put a name to this campaign later on. It will be hosted on our site and we can all contribute.

    Sustain the Community

As with all groups, we need to sustain a new level of ownership. Aichung, Alan, Gill and I had been running the group for the past 3 years. I would like to invite new blood to help run the group. Whether you are new or seasoned, it doesn’t matter. We’ll show you the robes and eventually expand the team. There are a lot of things we can do and I want to engage you to contribute in the community. Tian An is also running the Office Group, I would like to highlight to you the good, relentless work he has been doing. In the next year, let’s get both our groups going and growing.

I am also very excited this month to see that Microsoft has released Hyper-V ahead of time. Lots of focus will go into Hyper-V.

This month, Edwin will be telling us about PowerShell, something really advanced. Edwin will present to you TechEd content, “A Lap Around Windows Powershell Scripting”. After the session, we will have a Round Table. This round table is aimed towards giving you a chance to shape how the group will be and what Microsoft should do for you. This session is all about you, and making SWUG and Microsoft relevant to you and your work.

    Cheers,
    Dennis Chung

    Time: 7pm to 9.30pm
Venue: 1 Marina Boulevard, Level 22 (Rm CF12)

Session 1: A Lap Around Windows PowerShell Scripting (Edwin Sarmiento, MVP)

In this session, we demonstrate how the simple but effective, scripting language in Windows PowerShell makes Windows administrative automation faster and easier. Moving forward, Microsoft will be incorporating future products with PowerShell, so don’t miss this session if you want to learn about PowerShell to help in your Windows Administrations.

Abstract: This round table will be a half yearly event from this July onwards. This will be a session in which I will share with you what is happening in Microsoft and in the immediate industry that I can see. As I embark on getting activities for you, I want to do activities that you will participate and find it useful for you and your work. Remember, this community is about you, not me. {Insiders} Technology Support Program

{Insiders} group has been geared towards giving you insights over the past year to tell you about emerging technologies. I have heard from many of your that you will really want to try these technologies because you have no support. Being without support can be a scary thing for an IT Pro who manages mission critical networks. I have worked out to merge a program in Microsoft together with the {Insiders} group we have been building. Each FY, {Insiders} will focus on emerging technologies which are relevant to the various community groups.

Thereby, I am morphing this initiative and add in a TSP for you.
    Participating in this TSP allows you to have the following benefits;
    - Access to Microsoft Evangelists Managed Forums to ask questions about emerging technologies
    - 1 Year TechNet Plus Subscriptions
    - 2x Premier Support Services Incident Tickets to support the technology
    - In some cases, Microsoft will assign an architect to help if necessary

    SWUG has changed name

SWUG is changing name to get better alignment to what we do. We are a group of IT Professionals who administer infrastructure involving Microsoft and non-Microsoft technologies.

Our old name: Singapore Windows User Group, hasn’t really got a clear line if we’re consumers or we’re IT Pros

Our New Name: Singapore Windows IT Pro Group.
It reflects our professional more accurately. Our group’s url stays the same http://sgwindowsgroup.org

    Hyper-V Has Arrived

Hyper-V was launched on 27th June 2008. It has RTMed. This means that you can use Hyper-V now and get support from Microsoft.

    To obtain Hyper-V, visit http://www.microsoft.com/hyperv
Microsoft.Com has also gone onto HyperV, read this. http://pingdennis.com/virtualization/microsoft-com-goes-virtual-the-hyper-v-way/
