The risk 2 side trust domain

    Hi guys ,

    1. May i know that what kind of risk that i might face, while doing the 2 way trust domains, and is there anything that i need be more concern and take care of, before we start? we are going to have a 2 way trust in between Singapore and US.

    2. Before i do the trust domain, i am thinking to change our domain name, will it affected my existing AD or others any others server which connected to the domain? FYI, my DC is working under Windows server 2003, and within the domain we still have Windows 2000 and Winnt connected?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

Why do you need to setup the trust of 2 domain in the first place? With that, I think we can advise you on the level of risk you are looking at.

By the way, are they under the same forest?

You mentioned that you got DC under Win2003 and there are servers running Win2000 and WinNT? The Win2000 and WinNT are just member server or Win2000 are DC of the same domain as Win2003?

    Hi,

Our company just gone through an acquisition, we will join to our new company's network, in our existing domain there's lot of file authentications and some management planning, that why we need to have 2 ways trust of domain first.

Both of them are not under the same forest. Regarding to our DC which is under Win 2003, and the Win2k and Winnt server are just a member server.

Inter-forest migration (common among acquisitions and carve-out activities) is a challenging, not to mention complex, exercise. My suggestion to you is to get expert advice from your friendly Microsoft contacts (or your consultants) before wallowing into this activity.

My 2 cents, read and re-read the "Restructuring Active Directory Domains Between Forests" topics in Technet (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc786927.aspx). Try out the ADMT and USMT (get the latest versions) until you are familiar with the tools. Set up a test lab and simulate a test run. It takes a lot of planning and preparation to pull off a seamless domain/forest migration. And pray hard. =)
